GORDON’S SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED IN 1886 by public subscription, at the express wish of Queen Victoria, as the National Memorial to General Gordon, who was killed at Khartoum in January 1885. Since its foundation the School has been privileged to have the reigning Monarch as its Patron.
A unique feature is the 40 strong marching band featuring bagpipes and drums. The band reflects the ceremonial tradition of Gordon’s School, which has been established for over 100 years, and is maintained today.
Under the leadership of the school bandmaster Mr.Cecil McCready, the Band plays not only for ceremonial occasions but is also in high demand for fetes and other events outside the school. The Band wears a form of military uniform incorporating the Gordon tartan, and the same uniform is worn by all pupils on special occasions.
Last year the band performed at the Royal Bath & West Show, the largest county show in England. This was such a success that they have been invited back this year to play alongside the bands of the Light Division, HM Royal Marines and the US 6th Fleet.

Saturday 22nd of October saw a new highlight to the Gordon's School Pipes and Drums when they took part in a charity concert in aid of the Gurkha Benevolent Fund.
The pipes and drums played alongside the band of the Brigade of Gurkha's in the Harlington Centre, Fleet Hampshire.

The director of the Band of the Brigade of Gurkha's Captain Kevin Davies was most impressed by the turnout, conduct and musical ability of the pipes & drums, especially as there was a last minute change to the finale piece 'Highland Cathedral'. With little rehearsal time the pipers and drummers did all that was asked of them and provided a performance that will be hard to beat.
The band is very busy over on the run up to Christmas with performances at Remembrance Sunday parades both at the school and then at Chobham Village, the annual reunion lunch for 22 SAS Regiment, Beating Retreat at Grosvenor House in London and a charity dinner for the Children with special needs Foundation.
This is all good practice for the fund raising concert being held by the school in January. This event is to help raise funds for a new performing arts centre at Gordons. The entire music and drama departments from Gordons School will be appearing at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking, Surrey on Sunday 29th January next year.
